The history of Grasse

Grasse has a reputation for fascinating history, stunning landscapes and flowers. In the 16th century, the town was known for its tanneries which emerged along the little canal. At the time, the workshops tanning hides in the medieval town produced a very unpleasant smell. Some ingenious residents then came upon the idea of using natural essences extracted from the region's flowers to perfume the leather. That is how the profession of glover-perfumer was born...
